Wasdale - 8 July 2017

Report by John Boothman

I have to say it was a big day.  We left at 7.15, about 2.5 hour drive, then near 6 hours running and then the drive home.  It is the toughest race I have done to date. Stephen Shorrock set off well but the distance and climb took its toll and he lost time in the second half but still finished first Barlicker.

I managed to hold Lorraine off for most of the race, but cramps set in & she came past me on the last climb putting about 100 mtr on me by the summit of Scafell Pike.  I managed to pass her back on the rough descent & I was just ahead by the last checkpoint which was only about 600 mtr from the end but the running got better and I couldn't hold her off. Gary Bradley had a solid run coming in not far behind us. We all concluded we need more training for a race of this difficulty - 21 miles and 9000 foot of climb/ descent on tough going terrain. A great day out which we all enjoyed and feel a great satisfaction doing it. A big thanks to Katie towers and Ste Plummer who walked to two summits to support and take supplies for us.

The race was won by Carl Bell in 3:40:53  The four Barlickers finishes as follows:

130 Stephen Shorrock 5:43:45 (53rd MSEN)
148 Lorraine Slater 5:52:22 (4th W45)
153 John Boothman 5:52:53 (12th M50)
200 Garry Bradley 6:19:26 (22nd M50

233 finished & 51 retired which show shows the severity of this race
