Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. Last year, we said that we would improve with more experience of this race and so it turned out.  From our 18th place finish last year, we moved up ten places for a top ten finish - a top ten dominated by some seriously strong teams.

Marc Hartley & Julian Hood  were our fist leg runners and they handed over in 10th position.  The second leg runners of Stephen Chew and Matt Lalor had the teams in front in their sight and they were already closing the gap on the long upward pull from the change over point.  In the course of the leg, a lot of teams changed places, with one team flying past our runners as they tip toed down the tricky descent from Thornthwaite Beacon.  However they must have passed a few teams themselves, as they handed over in 8th place to Luke Maude and Shaun Chew.  They disappeared up Red Screes into the mist and were not to be seen again until the handover at Sykeside.  They completed the leg in a good time of just over 56 minutes, pulling back another place in the process.  However,  at the handover, there was a problem with the dibber.  As Shaun went to insert his dibber into the machine, he realised that it had fallen to pieces and that the end was missing.  This caused some confusion with the marshals as to what to do and they eventually handed them a replacement and sent them on their way.  However, over a minute in time and two places were lost at the changeover as a result.  Nick Treitl and Jimmy Craig set off determined to regain those positions and found themselves chasing the Bingley last leg pair of Rob Jebb and Ian Holmes.  On the final descent, they came to a gate just behind them and Jimmy jumped the gate to get his nose in front.   Ian Holmes was still hold of the gate when Nick did the same.  It was then a sprint to the finish, with our pair just managing to keep their noses in front until the finish line.

Our Leg Times and Places were:

10 Marc Hartley & Julian Hood 41:03
8 Stephen Chew & Matt Lalor 1:13:21  1:54:24
7 Luke Maude & Shaun Chew 56:26  2:50:50

Stuart Bryan, John Boothman, Pete Beresford and Dave Halliday went up today for a recce of the Langdale Race (see pictures above).  Their conclusion - it will be a tough one.

We had two runners out in this race.  In the first half of the race, there was a bunch of about seven runners who who were out in front of the rest of the pack.  However, in the second half of the race, they gradually spread out, with the two Salford runners, Lima Bruno and Glyn Billington taking the first two places.  Julian Hood was a close third with Ian Livesey under half a minute behind him.

22 Barlickers made their way to Birchwood for the the Northern Road Relays.  The first time the club has entered a road relay and everyone did the club proud.  The men got underway with Gary Shaw in 31st, Dan Taylor in 115th and Richard Starkie in 138th.  The ladies went 5 minutes later with Lorraine Slater getting proceedings underway in 53rd.

For the A team Nick Treitl came back in 34th on leg 2, Ian Livesey pulled a few places back with a cracking run to take Barlick to 30th.  Andy Berry had a solid run and stepping in at the last minute bringing the baton back in 41st.  Shaun Chew had a good run and clawed a couple of places back to 39th then Steve Chew finished off in 35th.

Andrew Carson had a cracking run for the B team on leg 2 pulling back 9 places and the team up to 103rd.  Des Walkden pulled another place back up to 102nd.  David Poole pulled another 3 back with a strong run and the team were up to 99th.  Pete Beresford did a solid job and pulled another place back and James Fent finished it off and came back 99th.

The C team amazingly pulled back 4 places on leg 2 even though Mad Bob Jackson decided to stop and have a chat after the first lap. Michael Alexander pulled 6 places back on his first run for a while after injury.  John Race machine Boothman pulled 2 more places back.  Andrew Chew had a great run and pulled 8 places back.  James stead pulled 3 back on the last leg and they finished in 115th.

The ladies had Emma Bailey on leg 2 and she turned an ankle but still managed to get round only losing 1 place.  Rachel Lowther had a solid run only losing 1 place also and then Jen Hird pulled 6 places back on the last leg to finish 49th.

A good learning experience for the club, with a few of our best runners unavailable we more than held our own.  The next road relay will be interesting to see if we can push on and qualify for the nationals.

Out of the 140 teams who started the men's race, the Barlick teams finished as follows:

35 Barlick A  2:07:16
99 Barlick B  2:28:37
115 Barlick C  2:46:57

Ladies

49 Barlick A  1:52:50
