Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. Barlick take third place

Race Pictures from James Stead

Seventeen months after the club came into existence, Barlick Fell Runners Open Team took third place in this prestigious race.  Everyone worked hard and there was a great team spirit in both teams, especially the mixed team, which contained many members who this time last year were not even running, let alone racing.

Calder Valley had set their stall out to go for this race and their team was packed with stars and internationals.  They showed their intent right from the start and had built up a lead before they left the Clay House Park starting venue.  At the end of the first leg, their lead was two minutes and they continued to add to this with each of the subsequent legs.  It was an awesome performance.

The real race was happening behind them.  Wharfedale got off to a good start and at the end of the first leg, they had a one and a half minute lead over Barlick.  Our second leg pair of Julian Hood and Stephen Chew managed to shave eleven seconds off this lead, but in the third leg, Wharfedale once more pulled away.  Both these teams were opening up the gap between themselves and Clayton who at this point in the race were lying fourth.  Our fourth leg pair of Nick Treitl and Jimmy Craig reduced the lead once more, this time by over half a minute, but this still left a gap of four minutes between these two teams, who were both pulling away from the chasing pack.  In leg five, Chris Barnes and Lucas Payne once more closed the gap, this time by a minute, leaving Barlick just two minutes and a half minutes behind Wharfedale.   On the last leg, Shaun Chew and Sam Wadsworth felt that they were running well, but they had no sight of Wharfedale in front of them, nor of the chasing teams behind them and Wharfedale once more increased their lead.   Behind them, in leg five Todmorden had managed to catch and pass Clayton and they started leg six with a slender lead.  The last leg was nip and tuck between these two teams, with Todmorden just managing to hold on to fourth place.

From a Barlick perspective, this was a very satisfying result and a great David and Golliath performance against the long established clubs.

The times for the top teams were:

1  Calder Valley 5:57:12
2  Wharfedale 6:15:55
3  Barlick Fell Runners 6:22:06
4  Todmorden Harriers 6:32:09
5  Clayton-le-Moors  6:32:27
6  Rossendale 6:33:02
7  Calder Valley 'B' 6:40:57
8  Holmfirth Harriers 6:47:41
9  Sale Harriers 6:60:49
10 Rossendale Vets 6:58:11

43  Barlick Fell Runners Mixed Team 7:29:34.

90 finishing teams.

In total, there were 12 mixed teams in the competition.  Barlick finished 6th out of these 12 teams.

Women's Race

This a short (3.6 miles) out and back run to Pinhaw from the centrer of Lothersdale.  It was won this year by Jack Smith of Wharfedale, who is returning to the form he displayed in 2011 when he last won this race.

Nick Treitl led the Barlicker home in 3rd place behind Darren Kay of Pudsey & Bramley with Andy Berry, not far behind in 6th place and Andrew Driver in 11th.

Barlick finishers:

3 Nick Treitl 25:25
6 Andy Berry 27:24
11 Andy Driver 28:34
33 Andy Hirst 31:30
34 John Noothman 32:07

In the junior races Harley Treitl finished 4th in the Under 8 race.

This race, organised by Stainland Lions, is a 10.3 mile multi terrain race through woodland, canal tow paths, trails and cobbled streets, with the occasional hill thrown in.  Richard Starkie took part again this year finishing in 147th position (out of 452 finishers), with a time of 1:34:30 which is an improvement of 11 minutes on his time of last year.

The women are taking over the world.  Katie Walshaw was not only the first lady, but she was also the overall race winner.

Sam Wadsworth had been partying the night before and went to this race merely to let his little girl run in the junior races.  However, when she finished, she asked if he was running and he felt that he was not setting a good example by saying that he could not be bothered.  Just to confirm that partying is not ideal race preparation, he had a shocker by his standards and finished in 30th place.

Rachel Lowther Wins the Ladies Race

This year, the race was won by Charlie McIntosh of Pudsey & Bramley in a time of 2:20:37, whist Rachel took the ladies race, improving on her time last year by over 21 minutes.

In the first part of the race, there was nothing to choose between the first three runners, who drew away from the rest of the pack, but as the race developed, Stephen Chew did not adhere to his original navigational plan and as a result of this, the two lead runners pulled away from him and he found himself caught by the next two chasing runners.  However, on the run in, he managed to out pace these two and secure third place.

In the ladies race, Rachel Lowther went off steadily and appeared to judge the pace of the race well managing to hold on to her lead and finish just in front of Kerrie Bretherton of Trawden.

The field was much reduced this year,  suffering from the clash with the Championship Race at Coniston
