Those of us in our advancing years can remember when the present Cumbria was Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. Each one hosted at least one of the Lakes highest peaks. This race visits each of the old counties and makes its way to the top of their respective peaks, Sca Fell Pike, Helvellyn and Coniston Old Man. This involves a race distance of 37 miles and an ascent of over 10,000 ft. Andy Hirst loves the Lake District and this sort of race. You have to run it in pairs and he normally teams up with Pete Jackson. This year, Pete was injured and he therefore joined up Simon Franklin who had also lost his partner through injury. Below is a link to Andy's account of the day. For anyone who knows the Lake District, Andy's graphic descriptions take you round those fells and valleys and as you read through it, you realise the magnitude of the challenge that this race represents.

Barlick Fell Runners have a structured training programme which caters for all abilities and the details are below. In addition, we have a complete beginners session which is basically a couch to 5K course and the next one will start in the Spring, when the weather gets better. The training sessions for the coming week are shown below. Further details of what is involved in each session is lower down the page.
Monday with Leanne Dinsdale
These sessions are off road over fell and trail and sometimes they are a cross fit/circuit type session. To take part, you need to be able to run 5-6 miles comfortably and turn up with off road shoes and for winter nights, a head torch. The sessions cover a wide range of abilities and the main thing is that no one is left behind as the group always keeps tracking back to the slowest runner, so that everyone is always working to their ability level. If you are not sure if this session is for you, turn up and give it a try - you will be made most welcome.
Tuesday with Nick Treitl & Andy Berry.
These sessions will be focussed on progressing abilities for both flat speed & hill strength through varied sessions. All abilities welcome & catered for, but the sessions will be demanding and will take place from various locations.
Tuesday Track Session with Harvey Grace
These sessions are for those who want to improve their speed.
Wednesday - Pub Run
These are informal sessions and cater for all abilities. Each week, those taking part meet up at a local hostelry, have a gentle running session lasting around an hour and then retire to the bar to sample the local ale and chew the fat. Everyone is welcome on these runs including none members, in fact, they are a good way to get to know the ethos of the club and decide if it is for you.
Thursday with John Boothman
This is aimed at intermediate runners, people who have completed the beginner course and want to take their running a little further. Having said that, the session also attracts the more experienced runners. The group always tracks back during a session so that no one is left behind. The better runners feel as much benefit as the less experienced as they run much further. Each week, the group will cover around 8 -10 km. In winter, trail or fell shoes are recommended, although not every week is off road. Bring along a head torch in the winter months.
Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you.
If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and she will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable.
Membership fees for the club are as follows:
Junior members under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent, guardian or other adult nominated by them, at all times and they will be responsible for their welfare, safety and behaviour.
Parents or guardians will also be fully responsible for the welfare, safety and behaviour of junior members over the age of 16.
Your membership expires on 31 December and you will receive a formal reminder that payment for the next year is due. It would be helpful if you can pay directly into the club bank account from your mobile phone or internet banking. The details are:
