Barlick Fell Runners have developed an advanced training program for our thriving junior section. The program is available to all junior members who have attended training sessions on a regularly basis thus far.
Some of our juniors are with us because they enjoy the fun aspects of our regular training sessions and they may not necessarily wish to advance beyond that, which is fine.
However, for those who would like to progress their running we have designed a challenging program for all abilities.
Juniors will be given the opportunity to advance through three stages - Bronze, Silver and Gold (one award per year) over a period of 12 weeks starting in May.
To reach the required standards the following criteria must be met within the 12 week period. Extra time will be given to achieve target lap times, but only if all the other criteria has been achieved within the 12 week period. It will be difficult to attain the Gold status for some, but this is because the bar has been deliberately set high.
If your child would like to take part in the scheme the onus is on you to let one of the coaches know.
We will post a notice on Facebook and on the noticeboard in the cricket club to let you know when each program is due to start. Details of the three schemes are below.

⚫Must be a member of the club and have your own club vest.
| ⚫Must attain Bronze status within 12 week period.
⚫Continued excellent attendance, attending a minimum of 9 out of the 12 sessions and turn up on time each week.
⚫Represent the club in at least 3 more races, 1 park run allowed. (Please see our race calendar on the club website).
⚫Attain required target lap time. A minimum 5% improvement on lap time achieved attaining Bronze award.
⚫Train away from the club at least once per week (10 – 20-minute run). Please see to your coach for further advice on this. Participation in other sporting activities is encouraged.
|⚫Must attain Silver status within the 12-week period.
⚫Attend a minimum of 10 out of the 12 sessions and turn up on time each week.
⚫Represent the club in at least 3 more races, not including park runs (please see our race calendar on the club website).
⚫Attain required target lap time. A minimum 10% improvement on lap time achieved attaining Bronze award.
⚫Train away from the club at least twice per week (Schedule of training to be agreed with coaches.) Participation in other sporting activities is encouraged. However at least one activity should be a run.
⚫Start using own watch.
⚫Start a training diary or on-line log.
⚫Adopt a ‘healthy diet’ make sure you eat your 5 a day and stay well hydrated.
Youngsters develop at different rates, so do not be concerned if your child goes through a period where they do not seem to making any progress. This happens to all runners, not only juniors. So long as they are training seriously and enjoying their running, improvement will come as naturally as day follows night.
We hold a series of time trials so we can monitor how our junior runners are progressing and these are recorded below.
• Any junior runner age 8 to 16 is welcome to come along to our Monday night training sessions. Please note we do not train on Bank Holidays.
• New runners are welcome to come along and try our sessions, however you will be expected to join our club if you attend our sessions regularly. Training fees are £4 per month paid by standing order and membership is £5 per year. (please see the membership page on our website for further info).
• In summer (Apr-Sept) we meet at Letcliffe Park in Barnoldswick and in the winter (Oct- Mar) we meet at Victory Park, Barnoldswick from 6.30pm until 7.30pm.
• A parent or responsible adult will need to complete a consent form.
• All children must ensure they are marked on the register between 6.15pm and 6.30pm.
• At training we split into several mixed ability groups led by Nick Treitl, Sarah Bell, Andy Berry, Lorraine Slater, Joanne Sadowsky, Luke Maude and Donna Milligan. We use regular time trials to help determine the groups.
• All training is aimed at preparing our juniors to take part in races and we expect those that train with us regularly to represent the club at races throughout the year – see our General Information Page.
• All our sessions take place outside in all kinds of weather therefore it is very important you come prepared. Appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn. We can give more detailed advice if needed but, in brief, you’ll need a synthetic base layer top (long sleeve/short sleeve/one or more) to suit the temperature and a windproof or waterproof jacket. Shorts are fine but you may prefer leggings if it’s especially cold. A thin hat (such as a ‘buff’) and thin gloves are also needed depending on the time of year. We supply Hi Visibility vests and head torches which must be worn if asked. Footwear should be proper running shoes (not fashion pumps or imitation football boots) with decent grip. Sports Direct usually have a good selection of junior shoes.
• It’s best not to try and eat a full tea before running; just have a light snack (banana, toast & jam etc.) and a drink, at least 40 minutes beforehand. You shouldn’t need a drink during the session but you’re welcome to bring one with you just in case.
