For over thirty years, the fell race has been held in conjunction with Buckden Gala and has become a “Classic” in the fell running calendar with many top runners coming to do battle 'on the pike' in as pure a fell race as you'll ever find. This race was first run in 1981 and the course was designed by Peter Jebb, who together with his wife Anne, organised the Buckden Fell Race for 20 years. The race is only just over 4 miles in length, but in those 4 miles, the runners have to ascend and descend 1,500 ft, climbing for almost two miles until the Memorial Cairn is reached. Ther race then becomes a treacherous descent before having to find the legs to jump the wall, to cross the road and onto the Gala Field and the finish.
Since 2006 the organisation of the race has been taken on by Barlick Fell Runners and the future of the race looks assured into the foreseeable future.
