Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. The pub run was down on numbers this week but not quality of participants with Jack Ingham making a much anticipated return.  Still no massive(work), Glenn (holiday) and John Boothman (tired!!!!). I don't believe race machine Boothman has ever been tired.  Sellors trapped on his hair dryer and was playing with the chain on his bike.  A quick emergency phone call and Shaun 'AA' Chew came and sorted it.  Once Sellors had sorted himself and got changed we were off on a shortish run.  The usual pace setters were off and whipped man Collins was soon pushing Sellors at the usualfrantic pace.  We soon made it to the bottom of the steep end of Weets and half bull half man Lee 'swell head' Edwards was off in pursuit of the hares.  We made it back to forty steps in one piece, although Sellors tried to hang himself on a stile on the way down much to our amusement (still needs to get a decent headtorch).  Ingham was suffering a tad and decided enough was enough and dropped in his house on the way past.  It was at the end of 40 steps where Jock caught us by surprise and darted off saying "see you next week", without us even being able to give him the whip phone app.  The best excuse for not having a beer though was presented by the Minotaur himself.  Jen asked Lee if they were going for a beer, Lee made it look like it was his decision and said no.  This was clearly a well rehearsed act to get him out of the pub.

Once we got sat down John Boothman joined us and did look a tad jaded.  Although the 3 peaks cyclocross and two training sessions would've rendered lesser men useless.
Andy Collins looked a happy man as he was off the hook for most whipped pub run member this week due to Jock's demise.  No Screw either this week, probably due to the rumours of Jack Inghams Wednesday night house calls.
Next week we'll be at the Red Lion and hopefully, we'll be back to full strength.

Chewy

Lee Parrington was holidaying in the Lakes this weekend when he stumbled across this race.  Carrying on his great form at the minute, he won it.

Further details follow.

Dea Walkden has been trying to get below 40 minutes for a 10K race.  He finished this one in 40:02, still a PB, but a tantalizing 3 seconds adrift from his target, which he still hopes to achieve before he is 50.

We had two members out in this race riding as Barlick Fell Runners.  David Poole had a brilliant race to finish in 89th position  and John Boothman did better than he expected finishing 335th.  John describes it as a bike race with three hard fell races thrown in, carrying your bike up and then riding back down on bone shaking descents.

Sam Gibbs and Shaun Chew entered under the Hope Factory Team and finished 53rd and 113th respectively.

89 David Poole 3:45:12
335 John Boothman 4:39:33

536 finished and a lot didn't.

73 Craig Child 46:53
92 Jean Rawlinson 51:36 Ist F60

Scott Boardman was disappointed with his race performance yesterday, but he had a run out in this race and finished with a PB of 43:45.   This is despite stopping twice, once to sort out his laces and the other to sort out his timing tag.  This is Scott's last run before the Chester Marathon next week.

The Men's Team Smashed It.

The men's team are in division two, but on the day yesterday, they beat the men's teams from all divisions and not only did they do this, but they did it by a huge margin.  It would be quite unfair to pick out any one individual from the men's team as this was done by a good team effort.  All our runners finished in the top twenty three which demonstrates that we have strength in depth.

Not only that, but our B team also had a cracking performance, finishing 8th overall.  Again, a good all round team performance.  This puts the A team firmly at the top of division two and the B team at the top of division four.

Quite unbelievably, the V40 team also did well, finishing 5th out of all three divisions. However, they were beaten by Preston, who are also in Division Two, but this still leaves them, albeit after only one race, in a promotion place.

The ladies team also put in a cracking team performance, finishing 3rd overall.  They were however, narrowly edged out by the Trawden ladies, who are also in division three, but again, this still leaves them in a promotion position. Like their male counterparts, the ladies B team also put in a good team performance, finishing 8th out of all divisions.  Do not be fooled by Heather Driver's finishing time, as due to a mix up, she was one of those who had to form an orderly queue to finish, to allow the men's race to start.  This probably added 2 minutes to her time.

The day also saw a new phase in the development of the club.  For the first time, we had junior runners out in this competition and they not only put on a good show, but many stopped around and cheered on our senior runners which helped to create a great atmosphere.   For many of them, this was there first taste of racing and they will have learned a lot from their experience.  Pictures of some our youngsters are above.

All in all, this was a good opening day for the new cross country season.

At the presentation evening last night, Barlick Fell Runners were awarded second place in the team of the year category and reflects much of what has been achieved in the club during its short life.

This event took place at Aireville park pitch and putt course. Lots of schools from the area took part and Jenna Boothman ran in her Barlick vest & represented Thornton in Craven school in the year 6 girls with around 50 runners covering about a mile.  She finished 4th and was well pleased, as last year she finished 18th.  As a result, she is through to the semi finals at Giggleswick.

Ian Livesey won this race with Andy Berry finishing fourth.  Andy and the two chaps following him took a half mile detour (wrong turn),, otherwise we were on for a Barliick one-two.

A bit of a different race - it was all uphill.

This weeks pub run took place at The Calf's Head at Worston.  After much Facebook organisation Dave Halliday decided to take the green mystery machine and pick me, Andy 'whipped' Collins, Screw, Fat Jock and Pete 'smooth Legs' Beresford up.  We arrived early for a change due to the fact Screw wasn't driving and we were met at our destination by young Sellors on his Hairdryer.  Having recently passed his bike test the Ultra specialist is becoming a permanent fixture on the pub runs.  Nick Kendall and Craig Childs made the 7pm cut off point for the start of the run.  No Satnav, Palin or Massive this week so surely we wouldn't get lost!  We decided the best route to take would be the Mearley Clough ascent which was tough and relatively straight forward. Then the clag got thicker, the skies got darker and Sellors got faster.  Usually its the whipped back of Collins we see on the pub runs but Sellors was off like an eager spaniel yapping away as he decimated the pub run field.  Its fair to say the young lad needs to dig deep and buy himself a proper headtorch for the winter season as Swellheads bonce gives off more light on a clear night.  Once we reached the scout cairn it soon became clear we couldn't find a proper path so we just headed in the general direction of where we wanted to be.  It turns out it wasn't at all where we wanted to be at all.  Usually we have John Boothman's quality Satnav gizmo to put us back on track, not tonight!  So on we ploughed over rocks, through bogs, peoples gardens and farmyards.  We eventually found a road and could hear the A59 and Fat Jock went into auto pilot.  We didn't believe he knew where he was going so we consulted everyone's google sat nav on the phone and it turned out the big man was right.  We returned to what used to be a decent pub only a year ago.  Not tonight, Basil Fawlty was more organised than this crew.  After 20 minutes at the bar whilst the staff got their act together we eventually got sat down to discuss whose fault the getting lost part was.  We decided it fell on the heads of the 3 stooges of Satnav, Palin and Massive for not being present.  The craic ensued and we found the perfect mobile phone app for Andy Collins.  It turns out there is an app you can download that does the sound of a whip cracking when you do the whipping motion at your perceived target.  Needless to say poor old Collins got it all the way home.  Great night but we're still missing sicknote Ingham and his astounding level of sarcasm.  We have however worked out that when Screw is at the pub runs he's nowhere to be seen.  Speculation is mounting he makes regular trips to Priory Way come 7pm Wednesday.  Its the last of the summer pub runs next week but you'll need a headtorch for definite.

Russell Parrington is targeting the Dublin Marathon at the end of October and as part of his build up to it, he has done the English Half Marathon.  Russell ran a great time of 1:15:47 in this race, finishing 6th and just edging out Nick Leigh of Horwich who is a top performer on the road.  The race winner was Daniel Cliffe of Liverpool Harriers in 1:07:44.  Looking good for a big pb at the Dublin Marathon.

Take a short(ish) journey to Lancaster next year and you’ll enjoy 6 miles of flat, fast competition in this well organised event, which can be entered on the day.  But beware of the “sting in the tail”.  To enable you to finish running through the portcullis of Lancaster Castle, the last 0.2 miles involve an unwelcome uphill grind.

Just one Barlick rep, in this race won by Dan Balshaw (C Le M) in 35.27. 173, took part receiving medal, tech t-shirt etc for his efforts.

44  TERRY LONERGAN   2ND M65     47.56

Yet even more success for Barlick Fell Runners this weekend.  Gary Shaw won this race quite comfortably with and Andrew Chew finishing third.

1 Gary Shaw 35:20
3 Andrew Chew 37:33

What a weekend for Jimmy Craig.  Yesterday, he ran the fastest leg for Barlick in the Road Relays and today, instead of putting his feet up, he took part in this race.

Ted Mason was there and both Jimmy and Ted have their eyes on the 2015 BOFRA championship title.  If Ted had won today, the championship race would have been over.  The only way to keep the title race alive was for Jimmy to get a win.

Jimmy found it tough after yesterday.  He set off in front, but half way up the hill, Ted passed him and was slowly pulling away.  When Jimmy got to the summit, he felt like he could not move his legs, but he dug deep and managed to get them moving again and pushed hard.  He caught Ted on the descent, passed him and pulled away, but it was a hard and close race.

It is now down the the last race at Wasdale Head to decide who wins the title.

In the ladies race, Angela Donlan finished 2nd lady and 1st LV40 and in the junior races, we had three girls.

1 Jimmy Craig 18:53
34 John Boothman 25:40
38 Angela Donlan 26:22 2nd Lady, 1st LV40
48 Craig Child 27:34

11 Jenna Boothman 11:4

19 Clover Edwards 6:29
21 Chloe Boothman 6:44

The Barlick lads took to the roads again in the northern 6 stage following on from the 5th place in the North west 4 stage relays and the silver Lancashire medal.  The six quickest after Matt Lalor were picked because he was on holiday.  Jimmy Craig was 2nd quickest last week but was quickest Barlicker on the day and came home 19th after the fast and furious first leg.  He was only 50 seconds behind the leg winner just to show you how stacked the field was.  Next up was Chris Singleton who pulled a few places back and brought the team home in 16th.  Gary Shaw also had a quality run and consolidated the 16th position.  Marc Hartley then took up the baton and pulled 3 places back and the team were sniffing a top 10 finish.  Tom Corrigan pulled another place back to get the team up to 12th.  Ian Livesey then ran hard and pulled another spot back to bring the team home in 11th overall.  This week the lads were first Lancashire team beating lLncs champs Preston and Blackburn.   A cracking performance which bodes well for the 12 stage, with the quality the club now possess'.
