This is not a long race, but it has a very challenging climb up to the Jubilee Tower. Robert Cranham set off up the climb at a steady pace and was in 5th place by the time he got to the Tower. However, one of the runners in front had put so much effort into the climb that he was completely bushed when he got there and he retired from the race. On the return, because of his steady approach to the climb, Robert had a reserve of energy and he stated picking up places, eventually moving into what he thought was 2nd place. He had to sprint hard at the finish to keep young Robert Palmer at bay, finishing 2 seconds in front of him. He was quite pleased with that position and was shocked when the marshal congratulated him on finishing first. It appears that Andy Ford who had a good lead at the summit went off route and eventually retired from the race. Many runners overlook the fact that navigating is very much a part of fell running and whereas the night before Robert had spent time studying the race map and a video of the race to make sure that he knew the route, Andy had not gone to such trouble and he paid the price in the race.
Whereas Robert has won a few minor races, this is his first win in a "proper fell race" and is the culmination of focused training and race preparation and it is nice to see the club name at the top of the results page.

The full results are still awaited. However, the top fifty places are available and they show that there were some good performances from the Barlickers with three runners finishing in the top ten with David Mirfield leading them home. No other cub could emulate that, although Settle Harriers were close. However, on the day, Barlick finished first team.
The Barlickers finished as follows:
4 David Mirfield 2:30:11 (1st M40)
9 Tom Corrigan 2:41:23 (2nd M40)

26 Ben Whitehead 2:51:58
46 Mark Horrocks 3:02:45 (1st M60)
47 Stephen Shorrocks 3:03:14

It was good to see Tom Corrigan back out again running and as usual, he gave it everything. After the climb up to Watersheddles Reservoir, he was just behind the eventual race winner, but as the race went on, the advantage fell to the younger man and he had to settle for second place ahead of that evergreen of fell running, Ian Holmes. Ben Whitehead had a cracking run, but was eventually caught by Dave Mirfield and they crossed the line together, making it three Barlickers in the top ten.
Robert Cranham had a very strong run up to the reservoir which he reached before Andy Berry, but eventually Andy hauled him back and finished just in front of him. There were good performances all round from the Barlickers and even Carl Pawson put in some effort instead of his usual jog to the pub. Poor old John Boothman. He did his best as always, but he has been devilled by a leg injury which his doctor is struggling to diagnose and he finished further down the field than one would normally expect.
