It has always been a battle between Jimmy Craig and Ted Mason and today Ted came off best, finishing in 2nd place and edging Jimmy into 3rd. Further down the field, Robert Cranham descended well down the final scree only to lose three places on the final run iin.

12 Robert Cranham 15:45
We put in a mixed vets team into this event and came home 4th vets team in a time of 7:51:35
This race started at a fast pace set by the leading runners. By the summit, Mark Howard had taken the lead, but was being closely chased by Matt Watson. These two were followed by Matthew Heppenstall and all three had opened up a large gap over the chasing pack. On another day, Matt Watson would probably have finished as the race winner, but he was up against a very quick runner who finished the race only just outside of the record. Mark Howard was only just 3 seconds from setting a new record.
In the ladies race, there was a tussle between Charlotte Jackson and April Thorpe, with Charlottt just leading at the summit, but April looked determined and confident and she managed to run out as race winner in what was a closely fought contest. Those two were way in front of the chasing pack, who were led home by Paula Cullen.
Of the Barlickers, they dominated this race with Matt Watson leading them home with five finishing in the top ten. In the ladies race, Paula Cullen led them home, finishing 3rd overall ahead of Jacqueline Collins. It was lovely to see Karen Lemon take third place on her return to competitive running in addition to getting a prize for first F40. Barlick won both the Men's and the Women's team prizes.

Once again, Matt Watson started this race like he meant business and took an early lead in this race, chased by Jack Broughton. However, by the plantation before the climb to the summit, Jack had closed the gap that Matt had built and the question was, would Matt be able to maintain his lead up to the summit. Approaching the summit, the early effort had taken its toll and Matt was reduced to walking, but as he started his return, he once more opened up the gap and once more ran out an easy winner ahead of Jack Broughtpn and promising young Sam Midgley from Trawden.
In the ladies race, Louise Powell-Smith was in control throughout the race and finished just ahead of Sophie Whittaker and April Thorpe.
Both team prizes went to the home club.

John Boothman drove up to Edinburgh in his camper van, where he stopped overnight, ready for an early start. After all the recent cool weather, the day was something else and the heat does not suit John. The first half of the race went reasonably well for him, but in the second half, the heat began to take its toll, not only on John, but on many other runners too and particularly towards the finish, there were many runners at the side of the road in deep trouble. John did finish, although at just under 4 hours was a bit slower than last year. he was dehydrated at the end of the race and he rested for a while at the finish before setting off back home.

It was nice to see out in this race some of the people who took part in the first ever running of this race, including Ian Holmes, Ted Mason and Sarah Charlesworth herself.
Because of the relay on Sunday, just two Barlickers took part who finished as follows:
28 David Pease 51:40
57 Andrew Smith 59:40
This is probably the best race on Pendle and many would say better then the full tour.
We had two runners out with Dave Mirfield coming home in second place, not all that far behind the race winner and a really good performance by Mark Horrocks saw him come home in sixth place.

6 Mark Horrocks 2:47:39
Every year, we start this race with a lot of optimism as to what we can achieve, but we knew that we were up against a strong Calder Valley team and it would have been a big ask for a small club such as ours to realistically take on the might of Calder Valley who are stuffed with good runners. Having said that, on the day, anything can happen.
On the first leg, as expected, Calder Valley went out in front, followed by Rossendale and we were in third place, But Rossendale went wrong and initially Matt Watson followed them, but he then realised that they were going the wrong way and called them back, before turning himself to pick up the correct route. Tom had been trailing at this point and luckily the two met up just where Matt had gone astray. However, the error by Rossendale put us into second place which we held to the end of the leg. Jimmy Craig and Craig Shearer went off determined to catch the leading team and put in a good time and some say it was a club record for the second leg. It was Robert Cranham & Andy Berry who had to make the climb up to Black Shaw Edge and whilst Andy looked strong at the finish, Robert was obviously feeling effects of his recent marathon. Ben Whitehead and Andy Collins then took up the baton and worked well together pushing each other on before handing over to Luke Butler and Nathan Smedley. We were now settling into third place and this pair were running in the middle of nowhere, in that they could not see the team they were chasing nor the team who were following. They pushed on to keep the chasing team well behind them, so as to give the last leg runners a chance to keep third place and a podium finish. As it happened, they handed over to to Gary Shaw and David Mirfield with over a 7 minute lead over chasing club Wharfedale. By that stage, we, in turn, were over 7 minutes behind Rossendale, so they were impossible to catch, so it was just a case of maintaining a good pace and ensuring a podium position.
It was heartening to take a podium finish. It was a great reward for all the effort put in by everyone who took part today and to Ben Whitehead for his team and pairing selection.
