Membership fees

Despite the name, the club participates in all disciplines of running, fell, cross country and road and welcomes applications from runners of all abilities to join us. If you are not sure if the club is for you, why not come to one of our training sessions or one of our regular pub runs. You will be under no obligation to join, but you will get a feel for the club and a better idea if the club is for you. You can merely turn up to a training session unannounced, but it would be better if you contacted our club secretary first (details on the contacts page) and let him know that you will be coming and he will make sure that whoever is leading the group will look out for you. If you are an absolute beginner to running, you too are most welcome to join us in one of our sessions, but please contact our secretary first and he will make sure that you will have a programme with which you are comfortable. Barlick Fell Runners have a structured training programme which caters for all abilities and the details are below.  In addition, we have a complete beginners session which is basically a couch to 5K course and the next one will start in the Spring, when the weather gets better.  The training sessions for the coming week are shown below.  Further details of what is involved in each session is lower down the page.

Monday with Leanne Dinsdale

The meeting place varies, but this is always posted on Facebook, along with what footwear is needed and usually what the session entails. It tends to alternate between a hill session one week and a speed session the next. with a social run thrown in every now and again.
 
The sessions are tailored for all abilities, the aim is to get everyone, regardless of ability, fitter and faster.
 
Wednesday Track Session with Matt Watson

These track sessions are open to members of all abilities and will be tailored to individual needs and goals. 
 
These sessions can be used to supplement a member's own training regime, but they also work well in conjunction with Leanne Dinsdale's Monday night hill sessions, adding some flat running to improve speed and running technique on the flat.

There is no charge other than the fee for using the track.
 
Wednesday - Pub Run

These are informal sessions and cater for all abilities.  Each week, those taking part meet up at a local hostelry, have a gentle running session lasting around an hour and then retire to the bar to sample the local ale and chew the fat.  Everyone is welcome on these runs including none members, in fact, they are a good way to get to know the ethos of the club and decide if it is for you.

The venue for the next pub run will be published on the Barlick Fell Runners Facebook Public Page.

Thursday with Hannah Newbold

These will be time trials and will take place every two weeks.  For the first month, they will be over 5K, increasing to 7K and 10K over the following two months.

The venue is The Anchor at Saltergate, with a starting time of 6:30 pm.

Junior members under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent, guardian or other adult nominated by them, at all times and  they will be responsible for their welfare, safety and behaviour.

Parents or guardians will also be fully responsible for the welfare, safety and behaviour of junior members over the age of 16.

Your membership expires on 31 December and you will receive a formal reminder that payment for the next year is due.  It would be helpful if you can pay directly into the club bank account from your mobile phone or internet banking.  The details are:

A completely new route for the pub run this week, going from Elslack up to Pin Haw, whilst the beginners group ran along the old railway line.

The word is that Chris Smedley took part in this race and finished 73rd with a time of 1:37:52.

John Boothman ran in this race as he was sponsored for the 'Bottle Stop' charity by the Barnoldswick & Earby Rotary Club.  He ran steady under doctor's orders, although not as steady as the doctor ordered and he finished 26th out of 158 with a time of 43:56.

Good run from Andrew Carson saw him lead the Barlickers home in this race and they finished as follows:

This week, Dan Taylor took part in the Burnley Park Run .  It was the third time that he had taken part in the race, and he set himself a new PB.

 Jean Brown Sets New Record

The run of the day had to be from from Jean Brown who worked her way through the field from 20th position at CP3 to 9th position overall.  In doing so, she finished first lady and set a new course record.

In the men's race, Neil Northrop of Dark Peak set a scorching pace right from the outset, at the front of the field and the following pack struggled to keep up.  Shaun Chew was one of those chasing Neil, but the fast pace eventually took its toll and as he faded, it allowed Neil's team mate, Joe Blackett to move into second place, thus ensuring a Dark Peak 1st & 2nd positions.  Mike Wallis of Clayton improved both in his position and time from last year, but he could not quite keep up with Joe Blackett and had to settle for 3rd place.

Despite having secured a one-two, Dark Peak missed out on the team prize by one point and it once again went to Clayton.

Of the Barlickers, Shaun Chew was probably disappointed with his race, although he finished in a very creditable 4th place.  Andy Berry had a cracking race to finish in 13th place with Stuart Bryan not far behind him in 16th place.

Rob Weir, having made a navigational error, definitely did not enjoy his race and was disappointed with his performance, in fact, a smile only returned to his face when he was sinking a pint in the Assherton Arms.

Special mention must be made of Rachel Lowther, who has only been running for a year and she made it round the course with some encouragement from her sister, Kirsty Hall.  This is a tough course and the fact that she completed it says a lot about the determination of Rachel.

 Shaun Chew led the Barlickers home, but only just managed to beat Nick Treitl who must still have been feeling the  effects of the Three Peaks Race. Sam Wadsworth was third for Barlick.

On the night, there seemed to be a lot of Barlick vests on display and a total number of 16 Barlickers entered this race.  The only club to exceed this figure was Wharfedale.

As is usual with Barlick, a post race analysis took place in the local hostelry.

Lucas Payne has been nursing an injury for some time and he entered this race to see if his body was on the mend.  Here is his report of the day.

It was a very cold, windy day.  224 runners all lined up, or should I say huddled together, off went the hooter and we were away.

The route was very interesting in that it was a mix of trail, soft sometimes very muddy ground and normal narrow tarmac roads,  basically an uphill first section, then undulating and finally a killer hill at the end. Super views were the order of the day.

I was delighted at finishing 8th in a time of 38:09.  However, I was brought back to planet Earth when the fellow who had pursued me relentlessly from the start finished just behind me. Heasked my age to see if I had robbed him of a prize. I said that I was 44.   He said "That's fine, I am a vet 55. OK,  I may look like Gollum off Lord Of The Rings, but that made me realize that I was almost dead ...  you have to laugh.

My lady wife and her chum also finished their first 10k race in 1 hour.  Round of applause. You never know, we may tempt them to sign up to BFR.

The Race Director and his colleagues really did organise a super event, very well marshalled.  Hot drinks, flapjack and bananas for the finishers - many thanks to them all.
